Bangladesh ended the opening day of the Test on a positive note after dismissing Australia for 198 in their first innings and then making steady progress with the bat.
Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was the standout performer for Bangladesh with the ball, claiming six wickets as Australia were bowled out for a modest total.
Bangladesh’s innings began with a lucky escape for opener Tanzid Hasan. He edged a big shot toward point, but Nathan Lyon failed to hold on to the catch. Tanzid took advantage of the reprieve and gradually settled at the crease.
Shadman Islam initially partnered him well, coping with Australia’s pace attack and helping Bangladesh reach 27 without loss after seven overs. The opening stand ended when Shadman was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for 20 off 30 deliveries, with Lyon taking the catch.
Mominul Haque then joined Tanzid and the pair produced a confident response. They played positively against Australia’s experienced bowlers and completed a 50-run partnership in the 21st over when Tanzid struck Josh Hazlewood for four.
By stumps, Bangladesh had reached 96 for 1, leaving them 102 runs behind Australia’s first-innings total.
Tanzid remained unbeaten on 32, while Mominul was 35 not out. Their unbroken second-wicket partnership was worth 60 runs at the close of play.
With Australia dismissed for 198 and Bangladesh losing only one wicket before stumps, the visitors have made an encouraging start to the Test.
