Muslim Woman Attacked at Brooklyn Subway Station in Suspected Hate Crime

A Muslim woman was attacked at a Brooklyn subway station in what the New York City Police Department is investigating as a hate crime. The incident took place on March 17 at approximately 10:50 in the morning at the Ninth Avenue subway station on the southbound D train platform. According to police, the suspect was seated across from the 20-year-old victim when he began making remarks about the war in Iran and alleged that “terrorists are roaming the city.” The situation then turned violent when the suspect grabbed the woman and threw her to the ground, making Islamophobic remarks as he attacked her. Sources indicate that during the assault, the suspect also made derogatory comments directed at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The victim was treated at the scene following the attack. It has not been confirmed whether she was visibly identifiable as Muslim through her clothing at the time of the incident. After carrying out the assault, the suspect snatched the woman’s mobile phone and fled the scene.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black and white jacket, dark trousers, and black shoes. No arrests have been made. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and locating the individual.

The attack comes amid a broader rise in hate crimes targeting Muslim and minority communities across New York City. Advocacy groups have called on authorities to treat the case with urgency and to ensure the safety of Muslim residents on the city’s public transit system.
