Nabilah Parkes, Democratic candidate for Georgia Lieutenant Governor, has condemned the recent arrest of a woman following an abortion, calling the state’s strict law “another step toward moral decay.” She said, “Neither pregnancy nor ending a pregnancy is a crime. Law
enforcement has no place in someone’s personal reproductive decisions.”
Parkes highlighted that the law disproportionately affects Black women and recalled previous cases where women’s medical choices were denied dignity and control. She promised that if elected, she would fight to ensure no Georgian woman is criminalized for her reproductive health decisions and stressed that medical care, not criminal charges, should be the response.
Georgia currently bans abortion after six weeks, a law that critics argue places Black and low-income women at particular risk. Parkes is running as the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the upcoming election.
