Report Highlights More Than 3 Million Immigrants in New York City and Supports Initiatives

Desk Report: The New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) has released a new report highlighting the city’s immigrant population and the various initiatives undertaken to support immigrant communities. MOIA Commissioner Faiza N. Ali released the report on Monday.

The report presents demographic data on immigrants living in New York City and outlines the impact of MOIA’s programs and services aimed at assisting immigrant communities. It also details the office’s new priorities under the Economic Justice portfolio of Mayor Zohran K. Mamdani’s administration.

Mayor Zohran K. Mamdani said, “More than 3 million immigrants call New York City home. This report reflects the ongoing work necessary to support our immigrant communities, including neighbourhood-based legal support networks, multilingual outreach, worker protection initiatives, anti-fraud education, English language learning, and pathways to services that help New Yorkers build security and exercise their rights.”

Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su said immigrant New Yorkers are essential to the city’s economy and the strength of its neighbourhoods. “They should feel valued, safe, and able to participate in the full life of our city. Across our administration, we are working to protect immigrant workers, support immigrant-owned businesses, expand opportunity, and ensure every New Yorker can access the resources they need to thrive,” she said.

MOIA Commissioner Faiza N. Ali noted that, as the daughter of immigrants from Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, she is proud to continue serving New Yorkers in public service. “I look forward to working with community partners and stakeholders across the city to build real pathways to stability for New York City’s diverse immigrant communities,” she said.

According to the report, MOIA remains committed to empowering immigrant New Yorkers and protecting the city’s sanctuary laws. It highlights the challenges faced by immigrants, provides data on the city’s immigrant
demographics, and outlines the programs, communications, outreach efforts, and interagency initiatives led by MOIA in 2025 to improve the well-being of immigrant residents.

Under Commissioner Ali’s leadership, MOIA will focus on four key priorities: protecting immigrants’ rights and due process while upholding sanctuary policies; building coordinated and durable support systems; advancing affordability, worker protection, economic inclusion and empowerment; and reducing fear while increasing public trust.

In 2025, MOIA engaged with nearly 37,000 immigrant New Yorkers through outreach efforts and handled more than 10,000 telephonic interpretation calls in 64 different languages. The office’s immigrant hotline received more than 25,000 calls, and nearly 11,000 individuals received comprehensive legal screenings through MOIA Immigration Legal Support Centers.

Additionally, MOIA’s English Language Learning program hosted 239 classes, reaching nearly 5,000 English language learners.
