Messi reaches 100 goals
Messi opened the scoring in the 24th minute, heading in a cross from Luis Suárez. The goal was his 100th for Inter Miami in 115 appearances across all competitions.
The milestone carried an added touch of symmetry. Messi’s first goal for Inter Miami also came against Cruz Azul, when he scored a stoppage-time free kick to give Miami a 2-1 victory in his debut in July 2023.
Casemiro seals the victory
Cruz Azul threatened at various stages, but Inter Miami held firm. In the 81st minute, Messi delivered a corner that Brazilian midfielder Casemiro headed into the net to make it 2-0.
It was Casemiro’s fourth goal in his last five matches, with all four coming from headers.
The result also marked a successful competitive debut for Inter Miami’s new head coach, Cristian “Kily” González.
Fourth straight season with a trophy
The Campeones Cup is Inter Miami’s fourth major trophy since Messi’s arrival.
The club won the Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters’ Shield in 2024 and the MLS Cup in 2025 before adding the Campeones Cup in 2026.
For Messi, meanwhile, the night combined a personal milestone with another piece of silverware as Inter Miami celebrated their first Campeones Cup title.
