Nearly 93,000 people may have been affected by devastating flash floods in Nepal, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said, while expressing concern over the possibility of further flooding.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday morning, August 28, David Fisher, head of the IFRC delegation in Nepal, said the organization was deeply concerned about the renewed flood threat. He warned that rising water levels could cause the impact to spread to a much wider area.
Fisher said an estimated 93,000 people may have been affected in some way by Wednesday’s devastating disaster. However, he noted that it could take time to determine the full extent of the damage, as authorities and aid agencies have been unable to conduct a complete assessment in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
Meanwhile, the IFRC has stepped up emergency assistance for people affected by the floods. The organization has appealed for 25 million Swiss francs in emergency funding to support immediate, life-saving relief operations.
The IFRC said it was mobilizing the full capacity of its global network to provide urgent assistance to communities affected by the disaster in Nepal. The response will focus on delivering food, safe drinking water, shelter, healthcare and other life-saving support.
The severe flooding has caused deaths and extensive damage across several parts of Nepal, while many people remain missing. With the threat of further flooding, rescue and relief operations are facing additional challenges, making international assistance increasingly important to meet the urgent needs of affected communities.
