Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has strongly criticized the latest sanctions announced by the United States, insisting that Washington will not achieve its objectives by repeatedly increasing economic pressure on Tehran.
In a statement to Iran’s state-run ISNA news agency, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue to resist the growing pressure and would not be forced to change course by additional sanctions.
The United States recently announced plans for a new round of tougher economic measures targeting Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the campaign would focus on Tehran’s financial interests around the world, with the broader aim of cutting off Iran’s sources of revenue, including its oil income.
Speaking at a Treasury Department press conference on Monday, August 24, Bessent said the United States also wanted to discourage foreign governments and companies from doing business with Iran.
Pezeshkian: Sanctions Will Not Change Iran’s Position
Responding to the announcement, Pezeshkian rejected the effectiveness of Washington’s strategy.
He argued that the United States had failed to achieve its goals through economic pressure in the past and had also failed to gain anything during the recent conflict.
The Iranian president said his country had experience dealing with sanctions and would continue confronting economic restrictions with determination.
Washington Tightens Economic Pressure
The latest US measures are part of Washington’s broader effort to weaken Iran’s economy by targeting its financial networks and sources of revenue.
The Iranian government, however, maintains that years of sanctions have failed to force Tehran into submission. Pezeshkian’s latest comments signal that Iran intends to maintain that position despite the prospect of even tougher economic restrictions.
The escalating dispute is likely to keep economic pressure on Iran at the center of tensions between Tehran and Washington, with both sides showing little sign of backing down.
