Police have detained two cousins over the killing of a retired schoolteacher, his wife and their two children at their home in Rangpur city.
The detainees have been identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said at a briefing that the two suspects allegedly entered the rooftop of Ganapati Chakraborty’s house through an adjacent building on Thursday night and were taking yaba there.
Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, reportedly went to the rooftop after hearing noises and questioned the two men about why they were there.
According to police, the suspects feared that their identities would be exposed and allegedly strangled Ganapati with the gamchha, a thin cotton towel, that he was carrying.
Police said Ganapati tried to resist, leading to a struggle and commotion. His wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, then went upstairs after hearing the noise. The suspects allegedly strangled her with a piece of cloth on the staircase.
The couple’s daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty, were also killed, police said.
The bodies of the four family members were recovered from their locked home in the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area of Rangpur city at around 11:30pm the following day.
Ganapati’s body was found on the rooftop, while Pritilata and Agami were found on the staircase. Priyam’s body was recovered from underneath a bed inside the house.
The police commissioner said the identities of the two suspects were established through a joint investigation involving the Rangpur Metropolitan Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Detective Branch (DB).
Police said they have so far found no evidence of any previous dispute or known enmity involving the family and anyone else.
