Iran, Oman Close to Deal on Strait of Hormuz, Says Araghchi

Iran is “very close” to reaching an agreement with Oman on establishing a temporary maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Araghchi said negotiations with Oman were “very close to reaching the final stage.”

At the same press conference, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also discussed ways to address the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.

He said that violations could occur under any memorandum of understanding. Therefore, a special team should have been established to deal with such violations rather than resorting to confrontation.

The talks between Iran and Oman are being viewed as an important development toward resolving the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, in an interview with Axios, indicated that Washington currently intends to avoid launching a new military operation against Iran and instead pursue a strategy of steadily increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

Commenting on the US strategy toward Iran, Trump said, “We’re not making too much noise about it right now.”

The US president also said that an effective maritime blockade by the US Navy had increased pressure on the Iranian government, further deepening the country’s ongoing economic crisis.
