Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Struggles at Japanese Box Office Despite Global Success

Ranveer Singh’s latest film Dhurandhar has made a disappointing start at the Japanese box office, attracting only around 900 moviegoers on its opening day and missing the country’s top 25 films during its debut weekend.

Released in Japan on July 10, the film saw limited audience turnout despite an extensive promotional campaign ahead of its release. Industry reports indicate that by 2:00 p.m. on opening day, only 449 tickets had been sold across 57 cinemas. Although the number of theatres screening the film later increased to 80, total first-day admissions reached just 900.

The modest opening means Dhurandhar also failed to break into the top 10 list of the strongest opening-day performances by an Indian film in Japan. The current 10th position is held by Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, which drew approximately 1,300 viewers on its first day. Pushpa 2 also fell short of entering the rankings.

The record for the biggest opening day by an Indian film in Japan continues to belong to RRR, which attracted 8,231 viewers on its debut. Other films with stronger openings include Saaho,Kalki 2898 AD, Pathaan, Salaar, Jawan, Rangasthalam, Devara, Baahubali 2 and Tiger 3.

Despite its underwhelming performance in Japan, Dhurandhar has enjoyed significant commercial success worldwide. According to industry figures, the film has grossed approximately ₹18.13 billion globally. Combined with the earnings of the franchise’s first installment, the Dhurandhar series has now surpassed ₹30.19 billion in worldwide box office revenue, becoming the first Indian film franchise to cross the ₹30 billion milestone.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan and Sara Arjun.
