Celebrating literature, nature, culture, and creativity, the 4th Rockland Retreat and Book Fair 2026 will take place on July 25–26 in Chestnut Ridge, New York. The two-day event is being organized by the Bengali International Literary Society (BILS).
Hosted at the Threefold Educational Center, this year’s retreat carries the theme “Read. Write. Reflect. Connect.” Organizers hope the event will serve as a vibrant gathering for Bengali writers, poets, artists, cultural activists, readers, and literature enthusiasts from across North America.
The program will feature poetry, short story, and rhyme readings, along with extempore writing competitions, a special showcase highlighting writers on the autism spectrum, and opportunities for authors to exhibit and sell their books. Emerging writers will also have the opportunity to explore publication possibilities for their original works.
Beyond literature, participants will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including forest hikes, yoga, swimming, and stretching sessions in the scenic surroundings of Chestnut Ridge. The retreat will also feature a selection of American and Bengali cuisine, as well as performances of Bengali and Western music throughout the two-day event.
Renowned Bengali poet and author Subodh Sarkar will attend as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Mostofa Sarwar will inaugurate the event. The retreat will be chaired by Mohammad Nurul Huda, with Gyana Mella serving as the Convener.
Over the years, the Rockland Retreat and Book Fair has evolved into more than just a book fair. It has become a creative platform dedicated to promoting the Bengali language, literature, and cultural heritage among younger generations in the diaspora. By fostering literary engagement, cultural exchange, and meaningful connections, the event aims to strengthen collaboration within the global Bengali-speaking community.
The retreat will be held at the Threefold Educational Center, 285 Hungry Hollow Road, Chestnut Ridge, NY 10977.
