Journalist Rashia Khatun is contesting in the upcoming local government elections in the United Kingdom as a Liberal Democrat candidate from the Newtown ward of Birmingham City Council. The election is scheduled to be held on May 7, and her candidacy has already generated notable interest within the local community.

Having lived in Birmingham for nearly four decades, Rashia Khatun has been actively involved in various social, political, and cultural initiatives alongside completing her education in local schools, colleges, and universities. Under her leadership, the Agroni Art and Cultural Society received the prestigious King’s Award (MBE) in recognition of its volunteer work. She is also a founding member and Finance Director of the international environmental organization “Amaravati.”
In the Newtown area, she has played an active role in school parent governance and has worked for several years to improve children’s development, recreational opportunities, and the overall quality of life for residents through community-based initiatives.
Professionally, Rashia Khatun is a media personality associated with LB24TV, BEONTVUK, and the North America edition of Prothom Alo. She is also a general member of the London Bangla Press Club and serves as an executive member of the Birmingham Bangla Press Club.
Originally from Nadam village in Sunamganj district, she is the daughter of noted social worker Haji Arshad Ali. In her personal life, she is married to musician Firoz Rabbani, a postgraduate in Economics from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. A mother of four, Rashia Khatun has sought prayers and support from the community as she embarks on her electoral journey.
