Two people were found dead inside a home in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens after an explosion and an armed confrontation with New York City police on Saturday, authorities said.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers responded shortly before noon to a residence on Ocean Crest Boulevard after receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported that her husband had allegedly killed family members. She also told dispatchers she had heard gunshots inside the home and had seen one victim before fleeing outside.
When officers arrived, they met the woman outside the property, where she warned them that her husband was armed with a shotgun. Police established a safety perimeter around the residence while attempting to assess the situation.
At approximately 12:15 p.m., a powerful explosion occurred inside the home. Moments later, a 33-year-old man identified as Kegan Thomas exited the residence wearing a tactical vest and carrying a shotgun along with additional ammunition, police said.
Authorities said officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop his weapon. When he failed to comply, police opened fire. He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Following the incident, emergency responders entered the home and discovered the bodies of two family members. Officials said the exact causes of death have not yet been determined, and an investigation remains ongoing.
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said the fire that followed the explosion did not cause any additional injuries.
Police also stated that the suspect had no prior criminal record and no documented history of mental illness in NYPD records.
The explosion caused damage to several neighboring rowhouses, forcing some residents to leave their homes. The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the incident.
Local officials said community organizations and nearby churches are helping affected families with emergency supplies, including food and clothing, while grief counseling and other support services are also being arranged.
The damaged home is located near several schools, although officials have not reported any injuries involving students or school staff.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
