U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at airports across the country, escalating tensions over an ongoing government funding impasse.
The warning comes as a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues, raising fresh concerns about airport security. On Saturday, March 21, Trump said that if Democratic leaders do not quickly agree to a funding deal, he would move to station ICE officers at U.S. airports.
According to the president, such a move would make airports “free and safe again.” In a message posted on social media, Trump claimed that ICE officers would ensure an unprecedented level of security. He also indicated that, in addition to handling airport duties, these officers would prioritize the arrest of undocumented immigrants, with particular attention to individuals arriving from Somalia.
The remarks come at a time when Congress remains deadlocked due to the partial funding lapse at DHS. Multiple attempts to pass a funding bill in the Senate have failed.
Democrats have criticised the White House proposals as insufficient and have long called for increased oversight of ICE operations. Their demands have intensified following a recent federal operation in Minnesota that reportedly resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens.
Democratic lawmakers have proposed separate funding measures for agencies not directly tied to immigration enforcement, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). However, Republicans have been accused of blocking these efforts.
As a result, airports are now facing staff shortages, leading to long wait times for passengers. The situation has worsened as many security personnel, affected by delayed pay, have either stopped reporting to work or resigned altogether, contributing to growing disruptions.
Amid the crisis, billionaire Elon Musk has reportedly suggested covering the wages of airport security workers. However, it remains unclear whether such a proposal would be legally or practically feasible.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats say they are preparing to bring a vote to fund the TSA fully. They argue that this would clearly show which lawmakers support ensuring payment for airport security personnel and which do not.
The combined impact of the funding crisis, immigration policy disputes, and airport security concerns is fueling renewed political tension in Washington. If the situation is not resolved soon, passenger disruptions are expected to worsen.
