Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has once again weighed in on football’s long-running debate over the greatest player of all time, insisting that his goal-scoring record makes him the best in the sport’s history.
In an interview with CNN Portugal, the 41-year-old forward said he believes his performances and goals have not received the recognition they deserve. He argued that whether his career tally stands at 920, 925 or 930 goals, his claim to greatness remains unchanged. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo Not Obsessed With Reaching 1,000 Goals
Although the Al-Nassr striker is closing in on the landmark of 1,000 career goals, he said he does not want to become consumed by the target.
Ronaldo explained that he prefers to let his career progress naturally rather than focus excessively on a distant milestone. Reaching 1,000 goals would be a significant achievement, he acknowledged, but he remains focused on the present rather than making long-term predictions.
He also spoke candidly about the uncertainty surrounding his future in football, saying that he cannot know how long his motivation to play will last.
“I live in the present,” Ronaldo said, adding that he could one day wake up and find that he no longer has the desire to continue playing.
Messi Rivalry Reignites the GOAT Debate
Ronaldo’s latest comments have renewed discussion about his rivalry with Argentine great Lionel Messi, with supporters of both players continuing to debate their respective achievements.
Messi strengthened his legacy by leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has built a remarkable career through his prolific scoring, success across several major European clubs and achievements with Portugal.
The two have dominated discussions about football’s greatest player for much of the past two decades. Ronaldo has repeatedly emphasised his versatility and scoring record, while the wider debate also considers trophies, playmaking, consistency and influence on the game.
For Ronaldo, however, the numbers remain central to his argument. As he continues his career with Al-Nassr, the pursuit of 1,000 goals offers another milestone for one of football’s most prolific scorers.
