Tarique Rahman Meets UN Refugee Chief, Calls for Safe and Dignified Rohingya Repatriation

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a courtesy meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih in New York on Tuesday, September 22, with the long-running Rohingya crisis high on the agenda.

The meeting took place at the Hyatt Grand Central New York during the prime minister’s visit to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Focus on Sustainable Solution to Rohingya Crisis

The discussions focused on finding a sustainable solution to the prolonged Rohingya crisis and creating conditions in Myanmar for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland. The two sides also discussed the need for a stronger and more coordinated role from the international community.

Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh had been hosting a large number of Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds for years. He stressed that their safe and dignified return to their homeland was essential for a lasting resolution to the crisis.

The prime minister also called for more effective and coordinated international efforts to facilitate the repatriation process.

Continued Humanitarian Assistance

The meeting also emphasized the importance of maintaining humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya refugees while strengthening international cooperation to accelerate efforts toward repatriation.

Barham Salih praised Bangladesh for its humanitarian role in sheltering the displaced Rohingyas and stressed the importance of sustained international cooperation to achieve a durable solution to the crisis.

The meeting came as the Rohingya crisis remains one of the key issues on Bangladesh’s agenda during the prime minister’s participation in the UN General Assembly.
