Argentina to Play Three Matches at Home—Will Messi Return?

Argentina are set to return to home soil for three international friendlies, giving fans an opportunity to see the world champions in action again. The biggest question, however, is whether Lionel Messi will be part of the squad.

The reigning world champions are expected to play three friendly matches during FIFA’s September-October international window, which runs from September 21 to October 6.

The matches are expected to provide Lionel Scaloni’s side with a chance to reconnect with supporters at home while bringing together several of the team’s biggest stars.

Three Friendlies Lined Up

Although the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has yet to make an official announcement, Argentine newspaper Olé reports that the schedule is largely settled. The AFA is expected to confirm the opponents, dates and venues on Tuesday.

Argentina will reportedly face Bolivia in Córdoba on September 30, Burkina Faso at El Monumental on October 3 and Benin at the same stadium on October 6.

The remaining issue is whether FIFA will officially classify the matches as “Class A” internationals. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is expected to approve the status.

The squad announcement may not come on the same day as the schedule. Training could begin in Ezeiza on September 22 or 23, with a strong squad expected to be called up. Alongside the World Cup-winning players, several new faces could also receive opportunities.

Why ‘Class A’ Status Matters

The matches being recognized as Class A internationals is particularly important for Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada.

The status would allow the players to serve the suspensions they received following the altercation in the World Cup final. Class A matches would also count toward FIFA’s world rankings and players’ official international statistics.

Scaloni’s Future Remains Uncertain

Another major issue surrounding Argentina is the future of head coach Lionel Scaloni.

The AFA wants Scaloni to remain in charge through the 2030 World Cup and has already conveyed that intention to him. However, the coach has yet to make a final decision.

Following the World Cup, the AFA reportedly spent around 50 days giving Scaloni space and avoiding pressure. No calls were made and no demands were placed on him.

Most members of his coaching staff are reportedly willing to continue, which has been viewed as an encouraging sign. Ultimately, however, the decision rests with Scaloni.

Walter Samuel to Leave Coaching Staff

One change appears certain regardless of Scaloni’s decision. Walter Samuel has announced that he will leave the national team when his contract expires in December.

Samuel reportedly wants to pursue a career as a head coach. He had received offers from several European clubs even before the World Cup but turned them down out of respect for his contract and commitments to the coaching staff.

If Scaloni stays, the coaching team will therefore need to find a replacement for Samuel.

Samuel played an important tactical role, particularly in developing set-piece strategies. Roberto Ayala, Pablo Aimar, goalkeeper coach Martín Tocalli, video analyst Matías Manna and fitness coach Luis Martín are all expected to remain if Scaloni continues.

Will Messi Make One Last Appearance at Home?

Amid all the uncertainty, one emotional question dominates: Will Argentine fans get one last chance to see Messi play on home soil?

Messi has indicated that he will no longer play for the national team, but supporters continue to dream of a farewell appearance in Argentina.

After winning the World Cup, two Copa América titles and enjoying more than two decades at the highest level, Messi’s international career has become one of football’s greatest stories.

Now, Argentine fans are waiting to see whether the country’s most celebrated footballer will return home for one final chapter in front of them.
