Israel and Greece are preparing to sign a major $3.4 billion defense agreement aimed at strengthening Greece’s air and missile defense capabilities.
The deal is scheduled to be signed in Tel Aviv on Monday, August 31, according to reports.
The project, known as the “Achilles Shield,” is designed to create a multilayered defense network capable of protecting Greek airspace and key military installations from a range of aerial and missile threats.
Combining Greek assets with Israeli technology
The agreement was approved by Greece’s Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense on July 23.
Under the proposed system, Greece’s existing military equipment will be integrated with advanced Israeli defense technologies.
The network is expected to incorporate Greece’s existing Patriot air-defense systems, along with drones already deployed at military facilities across the country’s islands and mainland.
These assets will be complemented by Israeli-developed air-defense platforms, creating a more integrated and comprehensive defensive system.
Strengthening Greece’s airspace security
Once operational, the Achilles Shield is expected to significantly improve Greece’s ability to monitor and defend its airspace while providing additional protection for strategically important military facilities.
The agreement also highlights the growing defense cooperation between Athens and Tel Aviv as both countries seek to expand their military and technological partnerships in the region.
