Bollywood star Aamir Khan is set to reunite with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker more than two decades after their acclaimed collaboration Lagaan. The duo are joining forces again for an upcoming sports drama, Lalkara, in which Khan is reportedly set to portray a 25-year-old man despite being 61.
According to reports, Khan has already begun working on a strict diet and fitness regimen to achieve the look required for the role.
A cricket story rooted in history
Lalkara is reportedly inspired by the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, adding another cricket-centered project to the careers of both Khan and Gowariker.
Their previous collaboration, Lagaan, released in 2001, was set during the British colonial era and revolved around cricket. The film went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most internationally recognized productions.
Khan is also known for undergoing major physical transformations for demanding roles. His work in films such as Ghajini and Dangal demonstrated his willingness to dramatically alter his appearance for a character.
That history has fueled considerable interest in his reported transformation for Lalkara.
Farhan Akhtar clears up casting rumours
There had been speculation that actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar would appear in the film. However, Akhtar has dismissed those reports.
Speaking to Variety India, he indicated that he was never officially attached to the project, making claims that he had “left” the film inaccurate.
Although he will not reportedly appear on screen, Akhtar remains closely involved with the production. He is producing Lalkara alongside Ritesh Sidhwani under their production banner Excel Entertainment.
The film’s complete cast and official release date have yet to be announced.
With Khan and Gowariker returning to a cricket-based story after Lagaan, Lalkara is already generating significant anticipation in Bollywood.
