Tensions between Israel and Iran are intensifying, with a senior Israeli military figure warning that Israel must be prepared to take independent action against Tehran if necessary.
Reserve Major General Uzi Dayan, a longtime associate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel could not afford to rely entirely on the United States when dealing with what it considers a major threat from Iran.
In a televised interview, Dayan described Israel as being in an “existential war” and argued that the country must retain the ability to respond to Iranian threats on its own.
He said Israel was preparing for various possibilities, including a preemptive military strike against Iran, and stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of decision-making when responding to perceived threats.
Debate Over Independent Military Action
Dayan’s comments come as tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and military capabilities continue to fuel concern in Israel.
The remarks have also intensified an ongoing debate inside Israel over whether the country could launch a major operation against Iran independently if Washington does not support or participate in such an action.
Dayan has held several senior positions within Israel’s military and security establishment. Because of his experience, his comments have attracted significant attention in both political and security circles.
His warning does not by itself confirm that Israel has decided to launch an attack. However, it signals that the possibility of unilateral military action against Iran remains part of Israel’s strategic calculations.
The situation adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile Middle East, where any direct Israeli-Iranian confrontation could potentially trigger a much wider regional conflict.
