India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh in September has become highly uncertain. Amid renewed political tensions between the two countries, the series now appears increasingly unlikely to take place.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials are still hoping that the situation will improve in the coming days. However, current developments suggest otherwise, according to a recent report by Cricbuzz.
Political Tensions Behind the Uncertainty
Tensions between the two countries resurfaced after former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several members of her party were allowed to hold a virtual press conference from New Delhi on August 5.
On August 8, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed questioned why India had allowed Hasina, who is currently in India and has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh for crimes against humanity, to engage in political activities and address the Bangladeshi media.
A source within the BCB reportedly said that Hasina’s virtual press conference had effectively become the “final nail in the coffin” for India’s proposed tour of Bangladesh.
Hopes Had Emerged Earlier
Earlier this year, Bangladesh withdrew from the ICC T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns. The decision was taken by the then interim government amid anti-Bangladesh activities by extremist groups in India.
After the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won the general election in February and took power from the Yunus-led interim government, hopes had emerged that relations between the two cricket boards would improve.
BCB President Tamim Iqbal had reportedly been making every effort to host India. The tour would also have provided significant financial benefits to the Bangladesh board.
What the BCB Is Thinking
Following Hasina’s virtual press conference, the subsequent developments, the immediate response from Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry and the Home Minister’s comments on Saturday have made it increasingly clear that hosting India in September now appears to be a distant prospect—perhaps even an impossible one.
A senior BCB official, speaking to Cricbuzz on condition of anonymity, expressed similar doubts.
“After everything that has happened recently, I am doubtful about this series. I don’t think we will get any response from the other side regarding the series. To be honest, it was supposed to take place by August 28. How much time do we have left?” the official said.
“I don’t think the series will proceed as planned. From the cricket board’s side, we have made every possible effort, but now it is beyond our control,” he added.
The official said that unless the series is formally cancelled, there is little the BCB can do other than continue to hope that the situation changes.
