After missing three consecutive FIFA World Cups, Italy is looking to rebuild its national team under one of football’s most successful managers. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has begun efforts to appoint Pep Guardiola as head coach and is reportedly willing to make special financial exceptions to secure his services.
Guardiola is currently on a coaching break after completing a decade-long spell with Manchester City. FIGC president Giovanni Malagò confirmed that discussions with the Spanish manager are underway, with the federation viewing him as the ideal candidate to restore Italy’s former glory following the departure of Gennaro Gattuso.
Italy Seeking a Fresh Start
Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the qualifying playoffs last April. The disappointing campaign led to Gattuso’s resignation, leaving the four-time world champions without a permanent head coach.
Since taking office, Malagò has made Guardiola his top priority.
Speaking on an Italian podcast, he said:
“It’s too early to say whether our talks with Guardiola will succeed, but opening discussions with him is an important and sensible step.”
He added that the federation is also speaking with other candidates and emphasized that the process remains open.
Financial Flexibility
Malagò acknowledged that the federation faces budget constraints but said exceptions could be made for a special candidate.
“We have financial limitations and must plan carefully. However, there is room for special exemptions in certain cases.”
When asked whether Guardiola was the person he was referring to, Malagò replied simply:
“Yes.”
Other Candidates Also Under Consideration
Although Guardiola is the federation’s preferred choice, he is not the only candidate. Former Italy coach Roberto Mancini and World Cup-winning legend Andrea Pirlo are also reportedly being considered.
Guardiola’s Record
The 55-year-old has enjoyed extraordinary success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, winning 41 major trophies, including three UEFA Champions League titles.
Guardiola has previously expressed interest in coaching a national team at a major international tournament.
Talks Still at an Early Stage
According to ESPN, negotiations between Guardiola and the FIGC remain in the early stages and have not progressed significantly.
After leading Manchester City since 2016, Guardiola is understood to be taking time away from football before deciding on his next challenge.
The key question now is whether the renowned Spanish coach will ultimately accept the task of leading Italy back to the World Cup and restoring the Azzurri’s place among football’s elite.
