Anthony Gordon has hailed England captain Harry Kane following his match-winning performance against DR Congo, saying the Bayern Munich striker is the only player who can be compared with Lionel Messi for his extraordinary consistency in front of goal.
England looked on the verge of a shock FIFA World Cup exit after trailing 1-0 until the 74th minute, but Kane produced a remarkable turnaround by scoring twice within 11 minutes to seal a dramatic victory for the Three Lions.
Gordon, who came off the bench and provided both assists, praised Kane’s ability to deliver in the biggest moments, describing his current form as exceptional. The 25-year-old winger said only Messi has displayed a similar level of sustained brilliance over the years.
Speaking about Kane’s stunning second goal in the 86th minute, Gordon revealed he was so confident the shot would find the net that he began celebrating before the ball crossed the goal line. He added that Kane’s ability to consistently produce world-class performances places him among the very best footballers of his generation.
