Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented the framework agreement signed with Lebanon in Washington as a historic political and security achievement for the people of Israel. He stated that the agreement grants Israel the right to occupy southern Lebanon, according to a report by Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister, the agreement is historic not only because it completely decouples the Lebanon issue from any memorandum of understanding between Washington and Iran, but also because it secures recognition from both the United States and Lebanon for Israel’s right to maintain its occupation of southern Lebanon.
Netanyahu Sees Victory in the Lebanon Agreement
Netanyahu explained that Israel will be able to sustain its occupation until all verifiable conditions outlined across the agreement’s 14 clauses are met. Crucially, he noted that these obligations are demanded solely from the Lebanese government, rather than being joint requirements imposed on both Israel and Lebanon.
Overall, this agreement provides Israel with the framework to maintain its presence in southern Lebanon indefinitely, or at the very least, for an extended duration.
What the 14-Point Israel-Lebanon Agreement Entails
The agreement includes provisions for certain pilot zones or experimental areas. However, Israel’s Defense Minister has already instructed the military to prepare for a long-term presence in southern Lebanon. He is well aware that this development will be highly advantageous for Prime Minister Netanyahu and the ruling coalition in the coming weeks.
