Xi Jinping Mentions Putin During Rare Private Garden Walk with Trump

A rare moment from Donald Trump’s recent visit to China has sparked widespread discussion in international diplomatic circles. Outside the formal summit meetings, Chinese President Xi Jinping personally invited Trump to walk through his private garden — an area that is rarely opened to foreign leaders.

According to analysts, such a scene is highly unusual in China’s tightly controlled and protocol-driven diplomatic culture. Chinese state media rarely shows Xi Jinping engaging in spontaneous conversations beyond carefully prepared official settings.

A Rare Scene Inside Zhongnanhai

Video footage from the visit shows Xi Jinping casually conversing with Trump through an interpreter inside Zhongnanhai, the heavily secured government compound where China’s top leaders live and work.

At one point, while passing through a traditional archway, Xi extended his hand and guided Trump to avoid stumbling, even pointing toward the nearby steps. The small gesture of courtesy quickly drew international media attention.

Century-Old Trees and a Symbolic Message

During the walk, Xi paused beside an old tree and explained that it was more than 100 years old. He then revealed that the tree had originally been two separate trees that gradually grew together over time.

Analysts believe the comment may have carried symbolic meaning, reflecting Xi’s long-standing message about cooperation and interconnected relations between major powers.

Trump’s Question Brings Up Putin

During the tour, Trump asked Xi whether he often brings foreign leaders to this part of the compound. Xi reportedly shook his head and replied firmly, “Very rarely.”

Then, smiling slightly toward Trump, he added: “Vladimir Putin was here.”

The remark referenced Putin’s 2024 visit to China, during which the Russian president reportedly spent extended time with Xi Jinping in the Zhongnanhai gardens and participated in private tea discussions.

Xi Showcases China’s History

As the tour continued, Xi pointed out several ancient trees and spoke about various aspects of China’s long history and cultural heritage. At the end of the visit, Trump expressed admiration for the setting, reportedly saying, “I could easily get used to an environment like this.”

A Rare Diplomatic Moment Beyond Formal Protocol

Political analysts say the informal garden walk stood out as one of the most unusual and personal moments of an otherwise highly choreographed summit.

In particular, Xi’s mention of Putin and his decision to invite Trump into a private setting are being interpreted by many observers as subtle diplomatic signals — not only about U.S.-China relations, but also about the evolving balance of global power and China’s positioning among the world’s major leaders.
