A shocking incident unfolded Saturday night in Washington, D.C., as a gunman opened fire at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.
The shooting occurred in the lobby of the Washington Hilton Hotel, just outside the main ballroom, where President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and several cabinet members were Present.
Gunshots were heard near the hotel’s main security screening area on the evening of April 25. The Secret Service quickly moved President Trump, the First Lady, Vice President Vance, and other officials to a secure location. This marked Trump’s first time attending the high-profile dinner.
The gunman was unable to enter the ballroom and was stopped at the magnetometer checkpoint. Law enforcement sources reported that approximately five to eight rounds were fired.
A Secret Service agent was struck by gunfire but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California. He was employed at a tutoring service called C2 Education and had received a “Teacher of the Month” award in December 2024. Authorities are still investigating how he managed to enter the hotel.
In a press briefing, President Trump praised the Secret Service for their bravery. He described the attacker as a “lone wolf” and said agents neutralized him quickly. Trump added that there had been no prior warning of the attack and expressed confidence that the gunman would not have been able to reach him due to the presence of undercover security personnel throughout the venue.
Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, announced that the suspect faces two charges: using a firearm in a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Trump also stated that the dinner will be rescheduled within the next 30 days with enhanced security measures.
Despite the attack, he emphasized that violence will not disrupt national events, saying: “We will not let anyone take over our society.”
